What are the STCW Requirements for Master/Chief Mate on Ships of 3000 Gross Tonnage or More (Near Coastal & Oceans) (II/2.1)?

General Requirements

Master

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Sea Service – 36 Months as OICNW or 24 months as OICNW with 12 months service as Chief Mate
  • 1/3 of Sea-time must be completed on ships of respective tonnage according to application

Chief Mate

  • Must be at least 19 years old
  • Sea Service – 12 Months as OICNW
  • 1/3 of Sea-time must be completed on ships of respective tonnage according to application

Application Requirements

  • Completed Dominica Application for Certificate of Competence and Physical Examination Report Submit copy of passport with application
  • Submit Sea Service Letters or copies of discharge papers
  • Submit proof of minimum 6 months supervised bridge watch duties during sea time.
  • Include all copies of held licenses, Certificates of Competence, training certificates, completed assessments and training record book

Training Requirements

This course provides training in the basic theory and use of automatic radar plotting aids. It meets the requirements for ARPA related competencies in Table A-II/1 of the STCW code. The course includes simulator training. (Minimum 32 hours)

This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/3 and A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code and includes traditional classroom lectures and two days of hands-on, practical firefighting exercises. (Minimum 40 hours)

This course covers the techniques of safe navigation and the responsibilities of a Master. Course includes lectures, simulations and group exercises. This course meets the Bridge Resource Management competences of Table A-II/1 of the STCW code. (Minimum 24 hours)

 (Required for Oceans).
This course meets the requirements of the Celestial Navigation competencies in Table A-II/1 of the STCW code including sight reduction, running fixes, star identification, ocean sailings and more. (Minimum 80 hours)

This course meets the requirements of Table A-II/1 of the STCW code and covers the subjects: route planning and scheduling; calculations; errors of interpretation; validity of sensor data and use, installation and correction of electronic charts. (Minimum 40 hours)

(Training is required only for personnel serving on ships with the respective equipment installed.)
This course satisfies the requirements of Table A-IV/2 of the STCW code for General Operator’s Certificate. Subjects include: satellite communications; INMARSAT, maritime safety information; NAVTEX, etc. and requires time utilizing a GMDSS simulator. (Minimum 80 hours)

This course meets the requirements of Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code and covers subjects including: shipboard personnel management and training; international conventions and recommendations; workload management. (Minimum 8 hours; Online courses approved)

This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/4-1 of the STCW code. Upon completion the participant will be able to demonstrate a higher level of competency to take action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency as required by the code. (Minimum 24 hours)

(Required for those designated to take charge of medical care on board ship.)
This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/4-2 of the STCW code. After successfully completing this program the participant will demonstrate competence to provide medical care to the sick and injured while they are on board and to participate in coordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships. (Minimum 48 hours)

This course covers topics and competencies in Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code, including: Terrestrial and coastal navigation; Electronic Navigation; Echo-sounders; Magnetic & Gyro Compass; Steering control systems; Meteorology; Watchkeeping; Emergency Procedures; Search and Rescue; Shiphandling; Visual Communications; Cargo Handling; Pollution Prevention; Ship Stability. (Minimum 120 hours)

(Training is required only for personnel serving on ships with Fast Rescue Boats.)
This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/2-2 of the STCW Code and includes subjects such as: launching and recovery of a fast rescue boat, construction, safety features, handling in prevailing sea conditions, etc. (Minimum 40 hours)

This course meets the training requirements of Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW code. It covers topics such as inflatable liferafts, launching and recovery of lifeboats, survival equipment and oar commands. (Minimum 40 hours)

This course covers risk assessment, collision avoidance and navigation using the RADAR. The course meets the requirements for RADAR related competencies in Table A-II/1 of the STCW code. (Minimum 40 hours)

(Required for mariners serving as SSO on board.)
This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/5 of the STCW Code and covers the subject matter required of a designated Ship Security Officer. (Minimum 24 hours; Online courses approved)

This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/6 of the STCW Code and covers the subject matter required of seafarers with designated security duties on board a vessel. (Minimum 8 hours; Online courses approved)
