Career Tracks

The Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration wants to help guide you through the next phase of your career. Below you will find a listing of career tracks which provide you with the required steps to become a successful professional mariner. After all phases of the career track are complete, students will receive a Certificate of Competency and Certificate of Endorsement and/ or Seafarer ID Book indicating their capacity for their respective new maritime careers. Credentials are issued by the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Administration.

Northeast Maritime Institute is the primary training provider for the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Registry. Northeast Maritime Institute works to ensure that students complete the training required to receive the necessary documents in order to work in maritime communities world-wide and to develop awareness for safer and more effective shipping.

II/2.1         Master/Chief Mate on ships 3000 gross tonnage or more, Near Coastal and Oceans


II/2.3         Master/Chief Mate on ships between 500 and 3000 gross tonnage, Near Coastal and Oceans


II/3            Masters on ships less than 500 gross tonnage, Near Coastal






Engine Rating:


III/4          Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch


III/5          Able Seafarer engine in a manned engine-room


III/7          Electro-technical Rating





Engine Officers:


III/1      Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch in manned engine room or Designated Duty Engineer in a periodically unmanned engine-room


III/2      Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer officer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3000 kW propulsion power or more


III/3      Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer officer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery between 750 and 3000 kW


III/6      Electro-technical Officer
